Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has debunked insinuations that the visit of national leader of the All Progressives Congress Bola Tinubu to the group had political undertone.

The Lagos state governor on Wednesday held a closed meeting with the leaders of Afenifere at the residence of the leader of the organisation, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

He had said at the meeting that the leadership of the APC had not endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari as its sole candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

Some political observers said, thereafter, that Tinubu could be interested in the country’s number one office.

But Afenifere’s Secretary-General, Sehinde Arogbofa, said Tinubu’s visit was for personal reason, political.

“People can give any interpretation to the visit. But from the Afenifere’s point of view, we are not aware of his (Tinubu) political ambition and his visit was not political,” he was quoted by Punch as saying.

“He came on a private visit and sought to be reunited with his socio-political source, which is Afenifere.

“In the past 15 years, he has not been very close to us and if for this time, he felt it, as a real Yoruba man, to pay homage to the leader of Afenifere, I think it is commendable. So his visit has nothing to do with politics. It was purely private and nothing more.”
